Inside UMB: A happy workplace is a healthy one

In the second part of our Inside UMB series, we are pleased to share how UMB’s health and wellness initiatives have provided a positive outcome for associate Janessa Baake. Learn how one of our UMB wellness coaches has helped Janessa achieve her health goals, in her own words.

Janessa Baake UMBWhen I started participating in UMB’s wellness program, I was on the higher end of all my health totals, meaning I was dangerously close to being in the unhealthy range for my height and weight.

I had gained weight after I had my daughter, and I felt slow, foggy and unmotivated to do anything about it.

I had tried everything from joining a fitness program that came with healthy shakes, to competing in a Biggest Loser competition, with zero results. Then, I decided to meet with Will, a new wellness coach at UMB.

A new way of thinking

Will asked me questions about how I wanted to feel, rather than focusing on the numbers. He made me think outside of the box and enlightened me to new ideas and ways of thinking. Thanks to his help and guidance, I’ve now exceeded my goal with a 17-pound weight loss.

It’s had a true impact on my life in that I have more energy, I’m no longer constantly hungry, and I actually feel the need to work out! I also feel sharper when doing my work and many tasks aren’t stressful or overwhelming anymore.

A brighter outlook

The impact of meeting Will and using UMB’s tools and encouragement has made my outlook of the company even brighter. Since this company cares enough to provide a professional to help me manage my weight, stress, and anything else health-related, it has shown that they care and that I am a valuable asset.

Being our best self

My high school health teacher used to say, “You can’t do anything in this life without good health,” and this journey has definitely proved that to me. When you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t be the best you. I’m happy to say I feel like I’m now the best version of myself. And I believe that is contagious with the people we come in contact with, including our co-workers and clients. I feel very fortunate that I work for a company that is fully invested in helping us achieve our best selves.

Inside UMB: Focusing on Abilities

As a part of our “Inside UMB” series, we’ll be sharing stories about our people, culture and all the things, big and small, that make us who we are.

This story focuses on “Associate Spirit.” One of UMB’s key shared values, we rely heavily on our people and their collective attitude and skills to differentiate us as a company.

Following is a Q&A session with Director of Talent Acquisition Mary Beth Majors that gives an inside look at how our diversity practices are helping us hire top talent.

When did you first meet Jennifer?
I met Jennifer Hertha over the phone in 2007 when recruiting her for a teller position with UMB. Impressed by Jennifer’s phone interview, I invited her to interview in person. When she arrived, I noticed that due to her being in a wheelchair, she had some form of disability.
Admittedly, I was hesitant at first because I wanted to ensure she was treated like any other candidate, but was also afraid of saying the wrong thing. However, what struck me most about Jennifer was that she was determined and didn’t let her disability impact her confidence in fulfilling her responsibilities. Jennifer interviewed wonderfully and was hired for the position.

How has Jennifer contributed to the organization?
Jennifer didn’t waste any time in showing us what she was capable of. She consistently impressed her managers, received multiple promotions, and is now one of my top performers on the Talent Acquisition team.

How has she uniquely added to the team?
Working with Jennifer has been such a good thing for me personally. While UMB has always had a focus on having diverse workforce, she has challenged me to take an even closer look at our hiring practices. Now, Jennifer and I advocate together for people with disabilities in the community and work to help other companies evaluate their own hiring efforts‡.

How does UMB view diversity?

VTO takes Anthony Rutledge back in time

For one associate, UMB’s volunteer time off (VTO) program* recently reconnected him to his past.

Twenty years ago, UMB associate Anthony Rutledge was a third grade student at Meadow Lane Elementary School. His class participated in the School of Economics, which provides students with a hands-on experience focused on implementing real economic principles. Students create their own business—from determining operating expenses to selling goods and managing money.

As a student, Anthony spent weeks preparing for School of Economics and when the big day came, he worked as an accountant. Through helping “business owners” track money, pay off loan debt and pay rent, Anthony was hooked.

Fast forward to the present, and Anthony, a customer relationship manager for UMB, found himself back at School of Economics—this time, as a volunteer.

“I wanted to give back to something that I enjoyed as a student. Most kids do not understand why they have to do something, and showing how what they’ve learned translates into how I, and the other UMB volunteers, make our living is very rewarding,” Anthony explains.

The VTO program empowers many to give back to organizations that have helped shape them. According to Anthony, “most of us would not have the opportunities we’ve had, or be where we are today, if someone hadn’t volunteered to help us in one way or another.”

*All full-time UMB associates (and part-time associates who work at least 20-hours per week) receive two paid days each year to volunteer at qualifying organizations of his or her choice. Learn more about our community involvement and associate benefits.

Jen Houston joined UMB in 2015 as community relations manager. In her role, she works to create volunteer opportunities and to be a resource for associates looking to get involved in their communities. Jen holds a Bachelor of Journalism degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Missouri – Columbia. She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree, with an emphasis in leading and managing people, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, in addition to completing the Multimedia Studies Certificate Program at the Kansas City Art Institute.

What is diversity and inclusion?

The words “diversity” and “inclusion” are used a lot in the business world. But how many of us understand the scope of what those two words mean? There is still a widely-accepted assumption that the diversity discussion is limited to minorities and women. But it’s so much more than that. Diversity covers race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, geographical location and even generational differences.

The word inclusion is equally important because it takes the idea of diversity from awareness to action. Once you are aware of the vast diversity in the workforce, the next step is to include as many of those diverse perspectives as possible into your organization.

So where do you start? Diversity and inclusion has to be more than paying lip service to the idea. Your company needs a plan.

Four areas to focus on:

  1. Executive Leadership Support

    Of course your executive leadership should approve of and enable your diversity and inclusion ideas and efforts. And while it’s great to have that endorsement, it’s only the first step. Implementing a successful diversity and inclusion program in your organization starts from the top down. Diversity should be on the agenda of every leadership meeting, just like the status update on the company financials.

  2. Measurement

    Use measurement tools – like a scorecard – to benchmark and then measure how your company is doing in specific areas. The only way to understand if and how you’re improving is to keep track of simple metrics. That way you can understand where the company began and what to do to improve. UMB is currently implementing these scorecards across our company.

  3. Required Training

    Required diversity and inclusion training for every associate in the company is also important. Do not assume that associates at a certain level of leadership don’t need this training.

  4. Collaborative Partners

    Consider working with local collaborative partners in your area. At UMB we work with organizations across our footprint to help us advance our diversity efforts in the areas of talent acquisition, associate engagement and business opportunities. For example, in Kansas City, we work with many organizations, including Urban League of Greater Kansas City, Hispanic Chamber of Greater Kansas City and a new organization called Concord Cultural Center.

Fully integrating diversity and inclusion in your company involves applying these ideas to every part of the organization and including everyone in the conversation. The diverse perspectives will likely make your company stronger. When you have multiple points of view, you can provide your customers with a well-rounded approach to the business.
