As Colorado’s banking landscape shifts, UMB stays the course

Paul Williamson, president of UMB Bank Colorado, recently talked with the Denver Business Journal about Colorado’s changing banking landscape and what it means for our clients, associates and the local economy. Read more to see how we are staying the course and winning with talent.

There has been no shortage of change in Colorado’s banking landscape during the past year. Specifically, there has been a high number of acquisitions within our banking sector, which, as one would expect, is causing some changes in our market, including movement among executives and customers. All this activity has provided me the chance to both appreciate the opportunities this brings as well as the benefits of being a long-standing business in this exciting city.

We have been banking customers in the Midwest for more than 100 years, and in Colorado for the past 25—and we continue to grow our presence, both in associates and clients. Most recently, we hired Bo Scott to help expand our team and our commercial lending business in this market. Bo has nearly 25 years of financial experience, and we have no doubt he will be a big part of our continued growth. I encourage you to read more about Bo’s background as a veteran and how he’s parlayed that into banking in this recent Executive Voice feature from the Denver Business Journal.

Another new associate who is bringing tremendous value to our clients and team is David Crittendon, private wealth regional manager for UMB in Colorado and Arizona. David is responsible for leading our team of private wealth management professionals in the region to deliver a concierge wealth management experience for our customers.

In addition to expanding our team, we are continuing to provide what customers need most in times like this, and that is to know that their bank – and their bank’s leadership – has certainty of execution, a sound balance sheet and strong relationships with their team. In today’s financial environment – particularly in Colorado – there is a need to be nimble, flexible and responsive to meet clients’ needs.

I believe UMB is unique in the Colorado market for a few reasons. First, we have the accessibility and approachability of a local community bank and that is important to our clients. At the same time, we have the resources and offerings of a national firm.

We also have access to executive leadership right here in Denver, which allows us to make the quick decisions that our customers need. Finally, we recruit and retain top talent. In today’s tight labor market, it’s challenging to do this, but we remain focused on this standard.

Our intention is to hire people who will be with us for the long term, so for us, finding the right talent is critical. It’s essential to who we are and what we do. It’s how we win. We believe we have the best talent in the market right now, and we are excited to continue adding to our team.
