More than a number: What UMB’s Forbes ranking really means

UMB recently earned the honor of being named one of Forbes “World’s Best Banks for their U.S. category. Across the globe, banks were rated on overall recommendation and satisfaction, as well as five additional areas: trust, terms and conditions, customer services, digital services, and financial advice. While I’m pleased to share UMB ranked No. 33 on the U.S. list, more importantly, I’d like to reflect on what this means for not just our company, but for our associates, shareholders and the communities we serve.

It’s great to hold a spot on this prestigious list, but it’s what’s behind the ranking that really matters. The five ranked areas are ones UMB intentionally focuses on to ensure we’re providing an outstanding experience.

However, our approach is what truly sets us apart—it’s getting to know each of our clients and helping provide honest counsel, strategic advice and steadfast partnership in both the good and the tough times. Our clients know they can rely on us to not just answer their questions, but to help provide solutions based on what they want to accomplish for the short- and long-term.

As such, the three categories within this ranking that stand out to me are trust, customer service and financial advice. These are the areas I believe make UMB different from other financial institutions. Here’s why.

Trust

Simply put, we do what we say, and we have done so for the past 106 years. Throughout our history, we have maintained the core values of being a financial steward and community partner alongside our unfailing belief in sharing success with our communities. For UMB, trust starts with our culture of doing what’s right, not what’s popular—and we are dedicated to making sure we have associates who believe and live out that philosophy.

From a business perspective, our associates demonstrate this through actions like sharing why they’re members of ethics alliances, how they counsel clients on business decisions, and how they inspire their teams.

In the community, it’s making sure we invest our time and resources in assisting key areas of need. From the house UMB sponsored and helped construct with Wichita Habitat for Humanity, to the work our St. Louis leader, Peter Blumeyer, is doing with CEOs Against Cancer, to the youth financial literacy needs we’re meeting by helping expand the Kansas City School of Economics program, we are deeply rooted in all the communities we serve.

Customer Service

As our vision states, we strive to be recognized for the unparalleled customer experience. At UMB’s core is a relationship-based model built for our clients. Our success comes with an ongoing commitment to fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking so we can best meet the financial needs of our customers, while exceeding expectations in a rapidly changing environment.

Whether you’re a business owner looking to transition your company to the next generation, a commercial real estate firm that’s ready to start a new project or a manufacturing company with capital needs, we will get to know you so we can tailor a specific solution to your situation.

Financial Advice

A significant part of our company is also dedicated to our personal banking clients. We know that understanding each individual’s story is the key to helping them write the next chapter. From helping teach your children about money to establishing a plan for retirement, we help our clients map out their financial future by understanding where they are now and where they want to be.

I am extremely proud of the commitment and dedication of our 3,573 associates. Our team embraces and consistently demonstrates the UMB culture that values high-quality relationships, long-term thinking and sound business practices. It’s their dedication to providing our customers with a best-in-class experience that truly sets us apart and makes recognitions such as this so meaningful.
