Q&A with Kansas City commercial banking president

John Russ, president of UMB commercial banking in Kansas City, was recently featured in Ingram’s Magazine as a 40 under 40 award winner for his achievements at UMB and his work in the community. Read on to learn more about John, including a few fun facts most people don’t know!

What do you like most about working at UMB?

Without a doubt, it’s the people. I’ve worked at UMB for 16 years and some of my closest friends are here. My career has allowed me to work with a variety of people throughout the bank, which has given me the chance to form some great friendships and work with some truly incredible people.

I also love the brand. UMB has been in Kansas City for more than 100 years and we have a strong reputation among our customers and the communities we serve.

Finally, our clients are wonderful to work with. I love learning more about them and helping them achieve their financial goals.

What advice would you give new UMB associates?

If you work hard and do what’s right, there are endless opportunities for you at UMB. If you treat your clients with respect and work to find the right solution for them, success will follow.

What would you do if you weren’t in banking?

I would want to be on the golf course! I would also explore being involved in another finance-related company where I add value by working with customers to help them build their business.

What’s the achievement you’ve been most proud of during your time at UMB?

In 2007, I was honored to be presented with the Doug Page award for demonstrating excellence in commercial banking. Over the years, Doug was a mentor to me and others who came up through the UMB ranks, so this is particularly meaningful given that history.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I am from a small town in Northwest Arkansas. It has a population of 1,500 people and I graduated with 80 students in my high school class. I always thought I would end up back in a small town, but I fell in love with Kansas City and could never leave.
