UMB was recently ranked the No. 1 bank on the Kansas City Business Journal’s Top Banks list, but what does this actually represent?

Every day we see “Best of Lists” published from a variety of sources. From Best Places to Live to America’s Most Artistic Towns, it seems there is a list for everything and everyone. From a Kansas City perspective, you’ve likely seen many of these as well.

One ranking I’d like to share some more information about is the Kansas City Business Journal’s Top Banks list. While I’m pleased to share that UMB ranked No. 1, more importantly, I’d like to provide thoughts on what this actually means for not just our company, but for our associates, shareholders and the Kansas City community. It’s great to hold a top spot, but it’s what’s behind the ranking that really matters.

To me, this ranking represents three things:

  • Understanding who we are as an organization
  • Committing to our business model and approach
  • Always keeping the big picture in mind

Our Purpose and Responsibilities

I believe UMB has maintained its competitive edge for the last 105 years because of the bank’s commitment to maintaining our strong core values, our focus on being a solid financial steward, and our unfailing belief in sharing success with our communities.

We’ve all heard the saying “a rising tide lifts all boats.” I believe as UMB continues to effectively operate according to our long-term strategy, all those associated and invested with us – associates, shareholders and the Kansas City community – will benefit.

Servant Leadership Approach Internally and Externally

At UMB’s core is a relationship-based model that benefits our clients. Our success comes with an ongoing commitment to fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking about how to meet the financial needs of our customers, while exceeding expectations in a rapidly changing environment.

In addition to our customer service commitment, our company culture lends itself to innovation, loyalty and collaboration, all of which allow us to foster meaningful, long-lasting relationships with our associates.

Understand how your business plan (and success) extends beyond the walls

As we have success (in this case it’s in the form of our local deposit growth), we are able to reinvest in the surrounding area. We know from recent reports that more deposits are finding their way into Kansas City’s largest banks than ever before. UMB holds nearly 20 percent of the area’s $55.66 billion in deposits, and we’re excited for what that enables us to do from a community investment standpoint. From being a Founding Member of the Sprint Center 10 years ago to helping educate local teens on financial literacy and helping our consumer and commercial clients maneuver the recent tax reform changes, knowing our business is supporting other companies and the city as a whole is both exciting and humbling.

It’s a great time for Kansas City. I can’t wait to see all the new things that will happen this year and beyond. And I’m thrilled that UMB will continue to be part of it.
