You may be under the impression personal bankers spend their time taking deposits and cashing checks – and sure, that’s part of it. At UMB, personal bankers not only assist with your day-to-day financial transactions, but they also build long-lasting relationships with our customers, help people build strong financial foundations, and get involved in their communities.

Our personal bankers have a range of responsibilities and are experts at providing the unmatched customer service UMB is known for. They keep a sharp focus on identifying customer needs and recommending the most relevant products and services to help you reach your financial goals.

To provide a better idea of how our personal bankers work together to help UMB customers, we interviewed several of our associates and discussed their day-to-day, how they serve our customers, and their own career backgrounds.

A personal banker’s daily schedule

Goal setting and staying agile

Every morning, teams at our branches “huddle” to prepare for the day ahead. They discuss goals for each associate and overview the day’s tasks, including assisting customers, reaching out to new clients, conducting financial transactions.

“It is so nice to work in an office full of team players and people who share my desire to make a difference in our community and in the lives of others. We work closely together on different projects and ideas.” – Isaac Riffel, personal banker

The morning huddle sets the tone and focus for the day, as no two days are the same. While days have a consistent schedule and cadence, personal bankers are also ready to adapt to whatever may happen, from managing a bustling and busy branch, to spending extra time digging into the details for a new customer and assisting with a wide range of needs and requests.

Individual banker goals can vary from outreach to new customers, reviewing the financial health of current customers to recommend products, or engaging with local businesses to promote workplace banking services.

Connecting with current and potential customers

Personal bankers are known for their positivity and ability to listen. Throughout the day, our bankers interact with customers who come into the branch or visit the drive-thru, connect on the phone with other customers, or even catch up with long-time customers who stop in to say hello.

“My favorite aspect of working at UMB is the customers. I enjoy conversing with them and learning about their lives.” – Connie Hurt, personal banker

Associates in our branches help with everyday financial transactions, such as assisting with opening and closing accounts, supporting loans and loan questions, processing wires and managing credit card accounts.

Personal bankers also get to know customers on an individual level to better advise them on which products and services can work best for them. This relationship-based approach to banking means that personal bankers often reach out to new customers to ask questions about their financial goals, plans, challenges and more.

Meet some of our personal bankers

Below we shine the spotlight on just a few of our hard-working personal bankers.

Isaac Riffel

Isaac’s banking career began when he worked as a teller for a regional credit union. He started his relationship with UMB as a workplace solutions customer at his former employer. UMB’s service and work culture impressed him so much that he decided to apply for an open personal banker position and was hired.

“My number one goal is to have meaningful conversations with my clients to ensure we are doing everything we can to offer the best products and services to better the financial lives of people in our community.” – Isaac Riffel

Sylvia Jimenez

Another of our personal bankers had previous banking experience before joining UMB. Sylvia Jimenez is a personal banker III in Wichita, Kansas. She has held banking positions at companies in Wisconsin, Texas and Kansas. She applied to be a UMB personal banker after a former colleague encouraged her.

“What I love the most about UMB is its values,” Sylvia Jimenez said. “UMB has been a company that truly puts its employees’ wellbeing first and foremost.”

Connie Hurt

After working in her family’s store, Connie Hurt, personal banker III in Tulsa, Oklahoma, decided to try her hand at banking, where several of her friends worked. She walked into UMB to inquire about a role and was interviewed on the spot. In her role today, she is an assistant manager with growth goals in lending and deposits, and she also supports her team to keep the branch running smoothly.

“I enjoy all aspects of banking, but my passion is lending.” – Connie Hurt

Career opportunities

Personal bankers are key to our commitment to the customer experience. In addition to career growth within the branch, a personal banker can expand their expertise to many other parts of the bank: bank products, loan processing, leadership positions, and more. Many of our current associates started as personal bankers who were given the opportunity to grow their technical and leadership skills and advance to all levels of the company.

We often hear that our associates in the branches appreciate “banker’s hours” which allow them to be home for dinner with their families every day. In addition to the team atmosphere and career development support, associates also benefit from perks like volunteer time off, tuition reimbursement, fitness reimbursements and comprehensive medical and wellness benefits.
